There's no need for sealant because the rubber ring around the thermostat creates the seal. Many new thermostats will come with the seal, including the genuine Nissan part # 21200-6M43A. FYI, the original thermostat is made by Fuji Seiko and I recommend sticking with the genuine Nissan part, as well. The correct plugs (as in the same from the factory) are NGK Laser Platinums #6240. It's due at 105,000 mile intervals. If you wanted a copper option, you could go with an NGK V-Power # 6376, but it would have to be replaced at 30,000 mile intervals. Also, don't put any anti-seize on the threads of the new, NGK plugs. NGK advises against it and it's not necessary as the plugs are plated.

Thanks. He decided to go with the OEM thermostat per this advice, and I'll tell him about the plugs.

However, for various reasons I don't think he needs plugs that'll last another 100k miles. Would the more basic platinum plugs or even copper work just as well for the next 20k miles or so, and would he notice any difference or decreased performance, gas mileage, engine reliability, etc.?

RockAuto recommends new boots. Not needed if existing ones look ok and car runs fine?

He also needs a new radiator upper and lower hose as they felt weak and iffy to me. Is any decent aftermarket brand ok, like Gates or AC/Delco, or also OEM?

Finally, he's due for a new air filter too. Same question, e.g. Wix or OEM.
If you go to NGK's site, you can look up the vehicle in the part locator and it will give all of the options for NGK plugs that will work. G-platinums or Iridium IX would be a less costly option and they will work well.
