Hi, i have a manual 1995 maxima with 103,000 miles. i just got it from someone. now it has been making a strange noise since i got it, but someone else told me that it was nothing and not to worry about it so i went ahead and bought it. in lower gears especially, it makes a grinding noise, like theres metal on metal somewhere. it is not increddibly loud but you can definately hear it. now i had the transmission checked out and it has fluid etc, but it still sounds like it is dry. it is kind of hard to describe. the thing is noone around here really knows what to say about it. the car runs great, no trouble at all, its just that noise. i dont want to burn up the transmission or cause a $2000 problem by not fixing a $100 problem, know what i mean? has anyone had something like this?

Sounds to me like input shaft bearings are going bad. they usually make gross noises in the lower gears, but it fades out due to road and wind noise in the higher gears...

the differential and output shaft bearings are prone to go bad on these cars, but the input shaft bearings are common on the older Maximas.

shouldn't be a $2000 job though. more like about $800 maximum. If they want more than that, then go somewhere else. The new bearings are about $150 a set and labor is 3-4 hours to rebuild the tranny, plus 3-4 to remove and install it.. so you're looking at 8 hours labor and $200 in parts, maximum.
(That's assuming it needs a rebuild, but have a trans specialist shop that knows nissans to check it out)

you eat away bearings, and can possibly cause more transmission damage, as well as fry your clutch.

see another thread in this forum about transmissions and you can see some of the other problems people have- one of the fun ones is the tranny not being able to go into 1st or 2nd gear, so you've got to start off in 3rd. ouch. talk about frying a clutch.
