I just took our 2004 Quest to the Dealer for a Check Engine Soon Light.

they tell me the code says the Catalytic Converter is out and it is $1400 for a new one... YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!! Why is it so much? I get Cats for my Jeep for about $50 at the local muffler shop... Why is it so much for the quest?

..that's because they getting a direct match OEM Nissan Cat and they generally run pretty high. The dealer will always be higher than a general auto place but they have the experience of knowing the ins & outs of the models they make. The local muffler shop use universal cats that fit multiple cars and are usually welded in.

let me ask you how many miles are on the Quest? A cat usually last 100k+.

oh.. hmm.. I don't know. Don't know if it "really" needs replacing then. I'd get a second opinion from another good auto shop. It might be an O2 sensor or an exhaust problem.
