HI GANG
I need help with my nieces 2001 sentra gxe. it just started running bad, IT HAS SHOWN NO CODES OR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT but it will not go over 3000rpm going up a small hill and has no power and is shifting rough and is generally gutless and slow to gain rpm. it idles smooth and starts well and does not surge or jerk, just no rpm.

so far the only issues I can see that MAY have any effect is: - she added oil and it is about 3/4 inch above the fill mark
- it SOMETIMES has a bad rattle in the small catalytic convertor looking unit in front of the muffler.

ideas folks PLEASE?????

Several things to check:
● The MAF may not be operating correctly. Check harness connectors for rusted terminals or loose connections in the MAF circuit or engine grounds. The MAF hot wire may be dirty; use only ELECTRICAL CONTACT CLEANER or a cleaner specifically made for MAF hot wire cleaning. This is the only thing you should use to clean your MAF. No windex, no carb cleaner, no brake cleaner, no rubbing alcohol, and no Q-Tips.
● Incorrect fuel pressure. Tee-in a temporary pressure gauge at the output of the fuel filter to measure it. The spec is: 34 psi at idle.
● Intake system vacuum leak. To check the intake system for a vacuum leak, attach a vacuum gauge to a full vacuum source. With the engine fully warmed up, the reading at idle should be 18 - 20 InHg. At 3,000 RPM, it should be around 21 InHg. If readings are under 18 InHg, check the intake manifold nuts to make sure they are tight. The gasket may have failed; spray a water mist at the gasket to see if the gauge reading changes. Also check the intake plenum bellows at the throttle valve and at the MAF for cracks or loose clamps.
● Fuel filter may be dirty, replace it.
● Spark plugs may be fouled; replace them with NGK OEM types. No aftermarket brands.
● Make sure the air filter is clean.

If the motor oil level is 3/4" or more above the dip stick fill mark, it'll cause additional internal pressure on the crank seals causing them to leak and causing early failure.

Thanks for the ideas, any more out there??
apparently the only fuel filter on these is on the pump in the tank???
also, there is a catalytic convertor just off the exhaust manifold, is there also another one further down the exaust system before the muffler???
this car has what looks to be another cat down there and that is where the bad rattle comes from sometimes.
