Timing chain!!!

Bought a 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, got it for 115 bucks from a family friend, he said that he drove it home from work parked it in the driveway and the next day goes to start it and it wouldn't start, had it towed to a mechanic and come to find out the timing chain broke and they wanted 2 to 3k to fix it, my concern is whether the head is trash as well, I know most times when the chain breaks the head and pistons are usually done too but with it being at such low rpms how much damage could have been done, is it worth going into or just getting a different motor, this is my toy so it's not like I'm in a huge hurry......ideas are appreciated!!!

It is very probable that one or more valves got bent. With a broken chain, the valves can even get bent when turning the crankshaft by hand; so don't attempt to turn the crankshaft by hand with a breaker bar. As long as you have fairly good knowledge of auto mechanics and want to tinker around with the engine, it'll be far cheaper to do it yourself. Get yourself a timing chain assembly. Remove both cams and set #1 piston to TDC; install cams and timing chain assembly. Now you can turn the crankshaft by hand safely. Do a leak-down test on each cyl to determine if any valves are bent.

Obviously we do not have the full story about the car, but it makes no sense to me that the timing belt broke after arriving home from a drive and then turning the engine off. I hate to disparage mechanics, but reality is that some can be surprisingly incompetent. How did he determine it was broken? Did he actually examine the chain? Do you know and trust these guys?It a pain to pay for the same thing twice, but I would get a second opinion, even if it costs more than what you payed for the Sentra lol.

That said, from what I have read problems with the 2.5 are usually related to the upper timing chain tensioner getting exessively worn. I am curious if there is a time and mileage threshold for replacing it? Or is it purely a case by case basis?

FYI Eric the Car Guy did a great series of videos on repairing a Sentra SE-R including complete upper and lower timing chain replacement on your very car!
