Shifting issues...bad tranny control solenoid?

1999 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 SE

I have now checked timing, tps voltage, and tried adjusting iac valve screw, I tried adjusting it, and as I was, idle was lowering. After only a few turns it closed as far as possible but rpms were still 1500+ it isn’t really spiking up and down. Every time car is turned off and restarted, it has a different idle speed of 100-300+\- rpms than what it was before it was turned off and restarted. But each time it is restarted it will hold whatever rpm it goes too. Usually between 1500-2000.

In park it doesn’t do it. Idles fine. Only idles high when in drive/reverse.

When driving, while in drive but at a stop, it will want to still drive foward even if brakes are applied. I assume high idle is causing it too want to take off vs it having a normal 750 rpm idle. There is poor acceleration, and shift points are way to early. It ends up in a higher gear at a lower rpm and engine speed. It’ll be in 4th under 25 mph. And won’t down shift at all until it gets under 25 mph. Even stomping on gas and jacking rpms up won’t make it down shift. Idk.

I’m thinking maybe tranny control solenoid or maybe a vehicle/tranny spreed sensor is going bad. I have read on other threads/forum pages that those two parts can cause those symptoms, even the higher idle rpms when in drive and not in park. And that they’ll cause a car to want to creep forward still while being braked.

Any of you guys and gals know anything about these parts and what symptoms they may cause?

Big thanks -Dirty P

This issue was thoroughly covered in your previous thread: https://www.nissanforums.com/pathfind...ng-issues.html

Rogoman. Thanks for the reply although not really accurate. Last post yes, someone thoroughly covered tps procedures, setting base idle with iac screw and making sure throttle screw is set to factory spec. And reminded me to also double check the timing. They gave me a deatailed summary of how to do those, luckily I was familiar with those a bit, and he even gave me links to service bulletins. That helped big time on making sure my base idle was set...I had it pretty much where it needed to be already, as i already had my park/neutral idle at 750. It was only in drive/reverse that my symptoms show themselves. but those previous post helped me narrow down and eliminate that the tps, idle air/throttle screw, checking timing again, was not causing my symptoms.

After discovering that after doing all that, my idle in park neutral still perfect, but only in drive does it spike in rpms.

Which is why I returned on this posts, made a new thread, explained at the top of this thread that I followed all the previous suggestions(although wasn’t the root issue, still helped settle my rpms in drive a little bit, but still overall high, and helped elimate possible causes, helped a lot still). Knowing I did all that, I came back here for some more help, cause y’all are some smart people on here, and I’m a quick learner myself. I explained all that didn’t solve the main symptoms.

I still have acceleration issues, and still poor shifting/downshifting timing.

To ask again, could a tranny control solenoid or a bad vehicle speed sensor cause these problems. I have read that those malfunctioning can cause the higher idle only in drive/reverse, and cause poor performance issuses like acceleration and shifting timing.

Rogoman, I’ve seen your reply’s to a couple people on here, you know your shit and I like that. As for many other long time members on here, y’all know yalls shit too. Curious as to what y’all have to say about the tranny solenoid and speed sensors causing this.

- Thanks in advance, Dirty P

@smj999smj thank you for the follow up response on my previous post about the throttle position sensor. Although I found out that I indeed had everything accept base iac valve screw need a slight bit tightening(lowered it to a perfect 725 rpm from the borderline 825 it was at). Tps and timing checked out fine! Your post helped me out big time to make sure I had those in spec, and how to adjust if needed.(was needed a bit) 🙂

now that I checked those off, and have tps and idle/timing properly adjusted, I sadly still have the same symptoms as described in the above descriptions. 😞

I would also like to add that I noticed my tranny fluid is slightly a brownish color. No burnt smell. Still a very faint sweet chemically smell. But it has the faintest red color to it in direct light but overall I’d say it’s more a browner color.

That said, I would still want to ask if a tranny control solenoid or speed sensor could cause these symptoms.

And could dirty/bad fluid/filter be the culprit too?

On a side note, are 99 pathfinders SE 4x4 known for any common transmission fluid failure or contamination like the 05-11 pathfinders have with their faulty radiators.

Any help will put a smile on my face

-thanks, Dirty P
