the fans aren't supposed to be constantly on. they come on when the engine heats up to a certain temperature, or when you turn the air conditioning on.

Fans will not come on at all even if I idle the car till if gets too hot

My fandoesnt seem to come on at all even when I have idled the car to just below the h mark. The only time I see it come on is when the ac is turned on. Could this be a problem?

same problem here. fans won't turn on with a/c off even if temp rises.

Check all the fuses in the engine compartment. There should be a relay box near the battery that contains two relays for the cooling fans; one of them may be defective. Not sure which one controls the fans when the A/C is off.

The first thing I would do is test the fan by applying direct power to it. Take some wires attach it to your battery terminals, and then unplug the fan and apply direct power to them. It might not make any difference since it's a fan, but try to use the correct polarity.

If it turns out your fans work fine with direct power, post back and I will find some other solutions for ya.

@rogoman , it has only one relay for the fans. the fuses are good.
@b13er , the fans are working with a/c on.

Have you checked your temp sensor?

This is from the service manual for my 94, same engine.

Rogoman is correct, there is more than one relay. Look at the wiring diagram from the service manual.

I'll look, but why are you going after the ECU, have you checked the sensor yet?

to download the b13 (1991-1994) service manual, go here: Factory Service Manual

Just remember, these are big.

the manual says terminal 1 to ignition, terminal 2 to batt, terminal 3 to ecu(pin#14), terminal 5 to fans(+). these are for the relay.

Pin 14 is not on the ECU inspection table. I looked in the service manual for your problem, check your water temperature switch and relays.

The ECU is going to feed a voltage to the fan circuit depending on what the temp sensor and/or temp switch is sending. I can't see the schematic for that relay very well (not as big as I'd like), but it sounds as though if you put battery voltage positive to pin 1 and negative to pin 2, you will be able to get continuity between terminals 3 and 5.

Edit: I was looking at the relay that was in the wiring diagram that you linked, it is the wrong relay. It looks like the same pin out, but I am standing by my disclaimer. If I can't see the actual schematic for the relay itself, I can't guarantee that I'm correct when I tell you what pin does what!
