I have been wondering for quite some time now, will a vg30de or vg30dett fit into a 1982 280zx? I asked this question in the 280zx forum but they said to come here.
You may also wish to look through HybridZ.org , they may have the information you require. I think the guys there have swapped just about every swappable engine into Zs of all kinds , so they should know.

Anything can be done with the right tools and money. Greg Dupree put a VG30dett into his 280 and it cost around 30K and he did all his own work.
the 280 is suposed to have a straight 6, and the VG30DE (especially the twin turbo version) are VERY wide engines. it would be easier to put a V8 into a 280ZX. I'm sure you could do the swap for around $10K, but it would be a basic swap, without all the really cool performance parts for the VG.
i would just put a 350 v-8 in your z car...theres actually kits out there for it and its cheaper to get the motor...plus, you can make some monster torque with a v-8(but i still preffer the torqueless but high revving rotary....i have seen rotary z-cars, very fast).
