I've tried looking around and can't find out how to hook up the timing light. I know the setting, where to adjust and how to adjust. I just can't get the light to work. Do I need a special connector.

First make sure the inductive wire is not crossing the postive and neg wire. Hook the inductive wire to the first spark plug wire then hook up positive and negative terminal.
If your looking at the engine from the front it's the first spark plug wire on the left side of the engine.

if this is the first time checking the timing on your car, might i recommend putting white out on the pulley (at the TDC mark) and at 15 degrees and 0 degrees on the belt cover.

Well , no, was the right answer. It didn't work around all three wires. So we tried just the thicker of the three and it worked perfectly. Now my question is, is there a vaccum advance or anything I need to unhook before timing it?

No, you are wrong. Again do not cross the wires up when checking for timing. What kind of timing light do you have, digital? You should not have to disconnect any vacuum lines if it digital.
oh digital is the key. Good to know, I had your basic timing light. I used the, put a spark plug wire inbetween trick. Worked pretty good, but I'll have to invest in a digital light. Thanks alot that's what I needed to know.
Hey Sponge, there is actually a loop on the PTU harness that allows you to attach the timing light there instead of trying to mess with all the wire on the coils. That is where I set mine and had no problem

some people have problems with the PTU loop, some people have problems with the coil pack connector. for me, i have to use the coil pack connector to use the "timing advance" knob on timing light. both locations "work" for me: PTU loop flashes everytime, the coil pack connector flashes slowly if that explanation makes any sense.

Figured it out. Will a basic timing light work or do I still need a digital one?
No need for a digital timing light.
I recommend disconnecting the TPS (throttle position sensor located on the driver's side throttle body) connectors to let the ECU know to use base timing (15 degrees on a TT and 10 degrees on an NA).
Now you can use the timing light to determine the actual timing on the pulley.
Adjust timing by spinning the CAS (cam angle sensor).
