Hey I'm in the process of buying a 1990 300zx Twin Turbo...only has 79k original miles on it, a bomex body kit, borla exhaust system and an air intake...i was wondering if theres anything i should check upon the purchase of the car ie any problems that are common in the car or if anyone has suggestions on what i should invest into the car at the beginning.
A thorough checkover, for one. 1990 being the first year for the Z32, it's bound to have some bugs that will need worked out. Timing belt should be checked, for certain. It's close enough to the service interval that it may not have been done..... Or there's pretty much a shiny new belt under those covers. Turbos are another issue. Not generally on a car with so few miles, but for it's age with so few miles I'm willing to bet it sat a lot, meaning any start ups were probably done on dry bearings. People don't think about it much, but the turbos themselves "idle" at 10,000 rpm....

Have a compression test done to see how healthy the Z is. Also the Z should not have blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe at idle.
you maby be able to get more, or more accurate info from the z32 furums

Hmm, blue smoke at idle would mean the valve stem seals were shot, not unusual on a turbo engine. More common on a modified turbo engine, since the exhaust valves get a lot hotter as boost goes up. In fact, if you could peek inside your valve cover after a hard run on high boost you'd see the exhaust valve stems glowing just a bit. Not as much as the turbo's themselves, though......

The info I gave holds very true. If the appearance of the engine looks clean but the compression is bad the motor was neglected.
How is this not accurate, please explain?
lol dont get so offended i meant in a differnt part of the forum, not that your info isnt accurate
