everytime i start my engine in the morning or after work, there is a squeaking noise from under the hood. it goes away after a minute or two. it only happens when the engine is cold though. does anyone have any idea what it is?

what kind of belt? timing belt? will it affect my cars performance? should i get it tightened? what happens if i dont get it tightened? and why is it only when the engine is cold that it makes the noise. sorry for all these questions.

It could be timing belts or accessory belts. It will rob hp if not taken care of could cause damage further down the road.
it ONLY happens when the engine is cold... it happened then i let it sit til the engine warmed up and it wasnt squeaking anymore. it only happens in first gear too.
When the belts are stretched or not tighten to specs. Also moisture and the changes of temp. will make the belts somewhat brittle which in turn make the belts slip on the pullies.
i took it to the shop and they said the squeaking noise is because of a dry power steering belt. the guy said just spray WD-40 on it to lube it and there noise will go away. is this a legit reason for the squeakin noises to happen?
