can someone tell me if the transmission absolutelty has to be installed to be able to start it? i went to put the starter in one day and realized there is something missing that the starter has to bolt into. but i dont know if it requires the tranny. or if its just missing a housing or cover. this is a 1985 300zx n/a mt

well the starter usually bolts to the belhousing on the tranny depending on the fwd or rwd it will be behind the middle plate or in front but ither way you need the bellhousing to bolt it up and yes you can start it without the tranny but you need to bolt the starter to something.

You could probably use a bunch of washers to simulate the thickness of the transmission when bolting up the starter. Or use shorter bolts.
