cold shifting

My 86 na has a hard time getting out of drive and in to o/d when the outside temp is cold. Why and what are the quick fixes for this? Will cardboard over the radiator work to keep the temperature up? Thge colder it gets, the longer it takes for it to shift

It's built into the transmission to not shift until the tranny is up to a certain temperature, so that it won't damage it. There isn't really anything that I know of that you can do for it. I also have an 86 and sometimes when the temps dip into the teens and twenties it will take it 8 to 10 miles to switch into overdrive. It's just one of those things you have to learn to live with.

It's dangerous to have cardboard in front of the radiator, mostly because you might forget about it and blow a headgasket........ The trans cooler is in the radiator, as with almost every other auto trans car, so this could be considered a legit way to warm the trans up faster. I'd recommend it only on the coldest days, though. I'd also recommend only a partial covering, probably about 1/2 the radiator, on the trans cooler side.

thats cool. this is my first winter w/ this car and i noticed it taking longer to shift. As long as it does eventually shift im not that worried about it. Gotta have that o/d w/ these gas prices!
