Yet another question about my 86 n/a

i've noticed when starting in first gear i hear a bit of a metal on metal sound from 1K up to about 1700rpm...also sometimes when driving hard it will grind a bit(waay different from the first sound i described, definitley gears clashing ) hitting second gear...

if i take off really slowly and baby it i don't hear the noise at all

my car also shifts rougher until it gets warm, then it's pretty smooth, but i can still feel some resistance when shifting into first and second sometimes...3-5th are butter smooth...

any ideas what to look at first?

also when sitting in nuetral with the clutch out i hear a bit of a whirring noise...could that be my throwout bearing?

should i hear any noise from it at all?

You should not hear any noise fromthe throw out bearing. How long since the clutch was replaced? do you abuse the clutch? The grinding could be alot of things but all the things you discribe point to the possibility of a clutch problem. but could be a master cylinder or slave cylinder starting to become warn, warn transmission, miss adjusted clutch, transmission low on lubrication, lubrication needing to be changed, or wrong type of lubrication. First thing I would do is check the lubrication level in the tranny. Probably should change it if you have not in a while. You have to be carefull what oil you use due to the brass sycronizers. I use Redline Manual Transmission oil.
