Alright guys, heres the deal. Just found an 88 Z with 106,000 M and what I thought to be a blown head gasket. Did a compression test and got low readings in the middle driver side cyllinder. Got the motor apart, gaskets look fine. The first passenger side piston got something inside that pitted the top of the piston, bottom of the head, and scratched the wall...even though that piston read great on the compression test. The deal also came with an 85 wrecked that has even less miles on it. Good back up plan...or so I thought. The 85 harmonic balancer was snapped off at the block and needs a new crank kit. The 88 shaft and oil pan are different, so I have recently found out. The heads aren't even interchangable. The alternator is in a different spot on the 85 motor and there is a black blower motor on the block where the 88 has its alternator. It has tubing that feeds up by the intake manifold for what looks like air ciruclation purposes. 87 and below guys know what I'm talking about. What is this for? If I re-cranked the 85 and dropped it in, would I have to swap ECU? Or could I re-flash the 88 ECU? What are my options here? Any help would be great. Thanx.
So the blower is an anti-vapor lock mechanism then? Is it necessary on the 85 motor if placed in the 88 shell or could I eliminate it and relocate the alternator? I will run into more problems if I swap the ECU. The 88 has elec defog mirrors and a digital gauge cluster. There's not much left of the 85 but from what I can tell, it doesn't have either.

Yes you can remove the injector cooler. I did so with my 85 and didn't run into any hot start problems. As far as the defog and the digital guages, the ECU has nothing to do with either one. The digital guages are add-ons run off analog devices that aren't connected to the ECU. For instance, the speedometer is run by a standard speedo cable going to a pulse generator, which then feeds that info to the guage cluster.
You could also swap in the analog guage cluster into the 88. There's a whole section on it on Z-Bums website.

I didn't figure the cooler was necessary. I wasn't sure the purpose. Good to know on the other accessories, thanx. I don't have the analog cluster, but I would probably keep it digital anyways.
Got it rebuilt and now it's still smoking. Like its burning newspaper. There is oil slowly dripping out the tail pipe. The spark plug has oil on it after only prolly 30 min of running. They all six had it when I tore it apart. I think oil is getting vaccumed back up into the intake and down to the pistons or the rings are shot and its coming up from the bottom. But would this be so on all six pistons? They even all gave good compression readings. HELP!!! PLEASE!!!
You'll get good compression, but the oil control rings may be shot. Thats the 3 layer ring sandwich under the main top ring. The wavey ring is the oil control ring. I'm assuming you disassembled the rings and cleaned out the grooves? And installed new rings when you put them back together? And at least had the cylinder bores deglazed? Missing any of the above will cause your particular problem.

All six plugs are oil fouled after practically no run time at all. I am getting lots of oil in all six pistons, therefore I don't believe it to be my rings. I now think my valve seals are bad. I replaced them and will have the motor rebuilt tonight. The old seals were considerably worn...the valve stem holes were much larger than the new seals, I can only assume they are stretched due to wear and hope this is my problem. Any input, opinions, suggestions?
