1994 GXE 163k miles, automatic transmission.

Hey guys, my dad just a few days ago bought this car to replace our old corolla that couldn't pass the smog test. I think he kinda rushed on the buy but my uncle who like all of us works on cars at home all the time says it was a good buy.

I took it out for a drive the following day to see that the transmission doesn't like to shift into second like it should around 20mph. If you gently feather the gas it will shift into second around 3k rpm but by the time that happens you are at the end of the block. In another situation when it does shift and you give it more gas it will downshift back to first again. Giving it alot of gas the car will easily reach 40mph and never shift either.

I changed the ATF this afternoon since it was also overfilled (which my uncle, my dad, and I thought was the problem) past the HOT section when warmed up to see the problem stay. I still haven't measured how much was drained but I only put back in 3 quarts. Before posting this I've searched to see others having simular problems but not with any hard jerking. It still shifts smoothly when it does but who knows about third and forth.

Any suggestions are welcomed, I was reading something about the throttle position sensor which I could check tomorrow but I don't think its related to this. I do not have anything to check tranny codes either.
