Is it reasonable to put studded snow tires on the front only, or do you need to go with all four wheels? ('94 Altima with 5 speed.)

Go with all four tires, otherwise the back end will start going all over the road. And remember, the studs will only help on ice, but will be no better than regular snow tires in slush and snow.

Living in Chicago I have more then my share of experience with snow and ice. I have tired studded tires but the ride on dry streets and road noise was horrible. I don't know if you have ever been in a military Humvee doing 60 miles an hour, but it is almost the same sound... there is a very very distinct humming vibration that I just could not stand for everyday driving.

My recommendation is to get a GOOD set of all season tires. I had Michelins on my last car and they were perfect in snow and pretty good on ice. If I wasn't getting traction with those tires it was because I was either buried, or because the street had an inch of ice with snow on top. (in which case should you really be driving around?)
