Idle vibration/codes 34 and 35

Real quick. I have done plenty of research to narrow down my problem. I really dont want it to be but I think it might be the intake gasket. I just need someone with the knowledge to give me the bad news.
Ok here it is. I have a 94 nissan that vibrates bad at idle and will not pass low speed emissions but did pass high. It is throwing code 34 and 35. From what i have read 34 is b/c of the idle condition. 35 reads EGR temp sensor. Before I bought it but in the last 15k miles the fuel filter, dist rotor, egr valve, spark plugs have been replaced. i have checked all of the lines to the egr and fixed the broken/leaking ones. I do not know if the EGR temp sensor will fix the problem or not and dont want to keep playing guess and check. I sprayed some injector cleaner on the intake and I THINK i got some bubbles above the furthest driver side intake plenum. There also seems to be oil on the distributor but have not checked in it yet.
Please give me some insight before i try to replace the intake. Thank you.

Shaun-
Remove the distribor cap and rotor. Once your at the distributor remove the plastic housing. There you will see and encoder wheel and sensor. If there is any oil present inside the distributor is bad and needs to be replaced.
On the subject of the intake, my question is when you sprayed carb cleaner around it did the idle smooth out or not? If it did then you have a leak.

well I found out I know someone that works at a Nissan dealership so they are going to diagnose it for me. I did not notice the idol get smoother when I sprayed teh intake cleaner. I also did not get a chance to look at the distributor before I dropped it off.

Well I got a message from my friend today and he said everything seemed fine except my ecu was the wrong one for the car. could this really be the problem? i dont think this would cause me to fail emissions especially since it has passed in the past before i bought it. the vibration has been getting worse since i got it. any ideas?

Maybe half the problem in regards to the ECu. You have intake gasket leak, you proved it out when you sprayed carb cleaner around it. It will only get worst if you don't fix it soon. Bad news is unless you can repair it yourself expect to pat 500-600 dollars.

Frank,
Sorry, I said I did Not notice the idle get smoother when I sprayed the cleaner. This weekend I am going to take a closer look at it though and find out for sure. Hopefully I can find someone to at least help me do it. Is there any way to do a vaccum test on these cars to check for vaccum leaks?

ok just her back from Nissan. He swears it is not the intake. He took the dist cap off and cleaned the inside and although it still vibrates the car runs much smoother at idle. Said its leaking pretty bad. Is there any way not to get a whole new dist? Is it easy to replace? Should i just get it at Vato Zone?

Never heard of anyone pressure testing for a intake leak, usually carb clean does the trick.

On the distributor, you have to buy it as a whole unit no piece mealing. Before you buy it make sure you understand the warrenty. SO rebuilts are prone to fail over time, very short time. So don't cheap out on this, spend the money and get a good one $500.

So you are saying go new and/or make sure the warranty is for over a year? Funny that you say that b/c i went through the reciepts last night from the guy I bought it from and he replaced in April 06 and I started having problems in Jan 07 or so. I hope this is straight forward I am going to try and fix it this weekend.

Now a question for the emission guys: will a weak spark (ie: oil on the distributor) cause you to fail emissions? My assumption here is that b/c there is oil on the dist that the gas isnt burning cleanly.

You can buy a new OEM distributor from a Nissan dealership in Dallas for about $400 plus $8 shipping. I don't remember the name of the place but you can Google for all the Nissan dealers in Dallas and find the one that features distributors for 4 bills. It's very easy to replace yourself if you have any mechanical experience at all. I was advised by this forum's "old hands" not to buy an aftermarket rebuilt because they usually will leak within a short time. I put on the OEM unit about a year ago and haven't had a leak since. Good luck.
