anyone know what a cracked air intake manifold does?

Hi guys. I recently discovered a big crack in the air intake manifold under the heat shield in my 1997 Altima SE. Now I've been having this problem for quite some time with the engine running rich, losing acceleration, and tending to stall at idle (erratically, not always). I was wondering if this could be the cause of the problems. Anyone replaced one of these before? If so, does anyone have an estimate of how much it could cost?

ummmm, there is no heat shield over the intake manifold, there is one over the exhaust manifold, and that would be easy to fix, and really shoudnt cost that much if you went to a junkyard. ON the other hand, an intake manifold will cost a bit more, and take quite a bit more time to replace.

You're right.... I probably got my facts wrong about that one. It's the exhaust manifold I'm talking about. Any ideas what a cracked one makes the car behave like?

well if its cracked then its not letting all the exhaust through to the downpipe, which in return misleads both of the Oxygen sensors, and then those sensors tell the car to richen up, cause it give the impression that its running lean.

I would check a local junkyard, you should be able to get one pretty cheap, and they are not that hard to remove/install
