help for buying a 97 altima with auto

A friend of mine is currently looking into buying a 1997 Automatic Altima, we gotted it inspected at the Nissan dealership. Their only concern was that the transmission liquid was brownish and smelled burnt. the car has 108k miles on it. Is this a known symptom for a fatal transmission problem, how durable are these transmissions. She will probably be driving this car for 4 -5 years and about 50k miles. and we want to avoid a major repair if possible. Thanks

My 96 Altima has 186000 and I haven't had any trans. problems besides changing the fluid. I suggest you do this for now and see how it runs.
