97' Altima 5-spd Tranny

Have a 97' GXE with 5-spd manual trans. It appears one of the inner axle seals failed and severe loss of lube has left the car with a highly audible bearing knock in the main case. Car is high mileage commuter vehicle with strong engine and a decent body. Am considering the purchase of a used tranny vs. the repair, but all references indicate the GXE can have either locking or non-locking differential. Will the VIN indicate which I have, or how can I verify this?
