HB ka24e burning rich

Just got this unit going, previous owner ran out of mechanic-skills and sold it to me for $100. All basic tune issues are done incl. fuel pump, filter, plugs, wires, cap etc.... Truck runs decent, get 21 mpg, but it just falls off when I hit a small incline, then I get on the gas and /or gear down. I can hear a faint rattle (detonation)? Timing advance is working I guess (checked it with light) and there's movement. Sometimes it also has cranking problem which includes the rich-black puff of smoke from exhaust.
It's a 97, cant get the codes out.
Gonna take it to mech. and hook-it-up.
Any suggestions?
