I believe the thermostat is right next to the water pump. As for the drain petcock (Ha! ...cock), there should be one near the bottom of the radiator. It's on the side that doesn't have the lower radiator hose, facing the engine. Keep turning the knob and eventually the drainplug will come out completely. Then you can do a good flush on the radiator.
Here's how I do a coolant flush:
Once you have the raditor running nothing but clean water out the bottom, put the plug back in part way so that a good stream of water is still coming out. Remove the raditor cap and jam the end of a hose in there. Turn the water on so that there's more water going into the radiator than coming out. Then then start the engine and let it run until it's warm. You will be able to tell when the thermostat has opened because more water/sludge/antifreeze (this is the stuff that was sitting in your engine block while you did the first stage of the flush) will start coming out the bottom of the radiator. Once you've got everything out, drain the radiator and top it off with however much antifreeze and water you use.
