Name that speedometer part! ('92 Hdbdy)

My speedometer is consistently off by 10-15 mph, even with a replaced cable.

A mechanic friend told me the solution. The speedo cable goes into the transmission. He told me (I was on my 5th beer, so bear with me) that the cable interfaces with a small part right inside the input there. It'll seem like a small gear, and that some teeth will be broken off, thus the speedometer is out of whack.

My friend (on his 12th beer) could not recall the name of the part, my Haynes manual is no help, and the parts websites haven't given me a clue in their drilldown catalogs.

So help me out guys--name that part so I know what to ask for and order. This is my last hope before dropping a stack of cash on a new or used speedometer unit.

I'm seriously not trying to sound like a smartass here, but I think you're looking for the speedometer gear. It's a small nylon gear that goes inside the tranny.

the plug is for the vehicle speed sensor of VSS. you could ask for the VSS gear and im sure that whoever is helping you would know what to look for.

VSS gear, that's the term I was looking for. Thanks.

Okay, I ask for a Vehicle Speed Sensor, what's next?

Can I actually just detach the speedo cable, pull out the old VSS, and pop in the new one? Or do I have to take apart parts of the truck that I have no business getting near.

I like being a DIY guy, but my abilities are modest.
