In 1994, I bought a 1990 Hardbody (4 cyl / 2wd) with 67,000 miles. There was a slight synchro grind in the tranny while shifting into second gear. I put in Mobil 1 Synthetic gearoil (75 - 90W) and the problem disappeared!
When I junked the truck 10 years later with 251,000+ miles, the tranny still shifted perfectly!
GL-4 75W-90 ONLY. Don't use GL-5 gear oil. Synthetic is better than regular. Some people use GL-4 Synchromesh.

'88 Pathfinder: 6" of lift, 33x13.50 Swamper LTB's, Rancho 9000's, L&P Stage 3 steering system, K&N, Pacesetter headers and 2.5" exhaust, Lock-Right locker, 110A alty and electric fan swap, dual batteries, 700W+ worth of PIAAs, etc.
Looking for a GL-4 90 weight (80W-90, 75W-90, etc ...) gear oil for a synchromesh tranny? Best to use either Red Line MT-90 or Specialty Formulations MTL-R:
Keep seeing others that have used mobil one. Anyone else used this with good luck. It was recommended on another nissan site but like everyones saying its GL-5.
(kkspeed) did your syncro problem go away as soon as fluid was changed or after few miles of running mobil one? I have same problem with my truck its a 95 with 134k and a slight 4th gear synchro grind.

GL-5 oils are not as corrosive (as a class) as they once were ... but there's still some risk of synchro damage.
Since you don't have to use a lot or change this stuff often, it's best to just bite the bullet and buy the best oil you can, even if you have to go mail order.

As I recall, the problem went away as soon as I changed the fluid.
