1997 Villager - code 0104 & speedometer probs

Hey guys, I have a 97 Villager. I know it's not a Nissan, but close enough, hope that's ok.

Lately the speedometer will occasionally drop to zero when driving. Today the check engine light came on. I got a code 0104 which is the VSS.

Is it correct to assume the problem is either the sensor itself, or the wiring from the sensor to the speedometer? Can I rule out the speedometer cluster itself?

I was reading another post about testing a VSS sensor. Something about testing the voltage across it. Does anyone have any more info about this?

Also, is there a speedometer cable?

Sorry for all the questions!
