have '97 XE ext cab w/2.4, 102k miles. replaced timing set-up w/full kit from Oreilly parts house @ 89k miles. now I have to replace it again. used haynes manual for specs and procedures, no problems when done, ran great. Anyone know why replacement didn't last? should I have gone to dealer for parts? I am F/T student & do pizza delivery P/T & I need this truck to last.
PS - I know chain guides are easy replacement, but w/ the type of driving I do, I figure once it starts rattling its too late for all components.
How do you know for sure that the timing chain needs is bad and needs to be replaced again?
It is common for the timing chain to rattle for a second or two at startup.
The occurs because the timing chain tensioner uses oil pressure and at startup, the chain can rattle until the tensioner pumps up with oil.

It doesnt just rattle at startup, it rattles a lot during operation. I didnt know the tensioner relied on oil pressure to adjust tension, when I did the first replacement I could tell the tensioner is spring loaded and presumed the chain slack was taken up that way. If what you say is accurate, then a new oil pump could be needed as well. THX
you should've replaced 2 o-ring type seals when you put the cover back on, those o-rings protect the oil jets and if you got some silicone in there and plugged up the jets.... thats where your noise could be coming from, you wouldnt be the first, if thats what happened

i remember the o-rings (left side, lower middle?), but cant recall replacing them or if i just put the old ones back. if new ones came with the replacement kit then i installed new ones. could be they got mashed during reassembly even with precautions taken. i tend to use gear grease for that kind of assembly. any way you look at it, i gotta tear it down. thx
