New battery in Hardbody

hi,
I want to replace the battery in my 1990 Hardbody pickup. It looks like it's a Group 75 in there now, but a battery shop says this model is supposed to take a Group 24. Now, I measured the area, and it looks like a Group 24 (with terminals on the top) would touch the hood. Does a Group 24 battery fit in this truck? (reason I ask is that I want lots of reserve capacity, combined starting/deep cycle if I can get it, and that's available in a Grp 24)

Also, there's a Really Ugly maze of connectors and thin-looking wire attached to the positive battery post. What are these? Why don't I see two heavy wires, one going to the starter and the other to the alternator? Can I replace this mess with a proper cable?

If you are looking for a deep cycle battery you might want to take a look at the Optimas. They are on the expensive side but it's a good battery.

I just picked up a new Battery at NAPA; the Legend 75. It looks big, but it does fit under the hood.

I whole heartedly disagree with Optimas. My Probe has killed 3 yellow tops in under 18 months. Anything that has high Cranking Amps and CCA will hold up well. There's also plenty of generica brand gel cell batterys.

your truck should take a group 25, your battery is on the right side and the + is on the engine side & back side of the battery, the group 24 has the + on the fender side and I dont think your + cable will reach, as for the little wires going to the + side, those are fuseable links, use those little pads under your cables to prevent corrosion to the links and they will live a long time.

I actually have a Group 24 battery, and the terminals are on the correct side for my truck. It still looks kinda tight at the top.

I don't like ANY connectors, etc. between the battery and the starter/alternator. They corrode, get loose, cause all kinds of problems. I think I'll replace them with some 00 welding cable...

I'll reccommend the Optima batteries. I've had my red-top in five different vehicles over 7 years and it's still going strong, even through multiple MULTIPLE discharges/charges, salt water, hot/cold, extreme vibration and bouncing, everything I've thrown at it has had no effect.

Interesting responses.

I asked if a Group 24 would fit, and what all those connectors are, and I get recommendations for Mfrs. I've already chosen my battery brand (its not Optima): I STILL want to know if a Group 24 will fit, and if I can replace those connectors with one or two large cables.
