1992 Terrano, Auto, Nasty 4WD Fault

hello. quick Question. When I am in 4WD (High or Low), all is well when travelling in a straight line. If i turn fiarly hard, the truck stops - almost like the brakes are on. No problem in 2WD. Very nast if at higher speed. Any ideas/help appreciated. Thanks. Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Sounds like you are driving on pavement or very hard packed ground while in 4-W drive. The front wheels make a smaller radius circle when turning than the rear which causes them to travel a shorter distance. Without some wheel slippage from driving on loose gravel, sand, snow etc the whole system starts to "lock up". I try not to do this with my Pathfinder as it causes a tremendous strain on the transfer case and components. I've heard of chains in the transfer case snapping in older 4-w drive pickups.

note: If you are on loose soil/sand etc then I can't think of what could cause that problem.

Exactly. You're experiencing drivetrain bind. DO NOT MAKE TIGHT TURNS ON HARD GROUND WHILE IN 4WD. Your t-case will die an untimely death, if not a CV axle or a hub.

Thanks guys. much appreciated. This was occuring when I was on my concrete drive way. This is a Japanese import - no English language drivers manual, so I am missing heaps of knowledge about my pride and joy. Have tried to find a copy on the web, to no avail. So really should arrange with the nearest dealer to buy one. So I feel like a bit of an idiot, and I have learned something rather important. Thanks again - Kevin
