just purchased an se..Love it! was wondering about gear engagement..when going from park to reverse i seem to get a little "bang" this happens when put into drive as well althought not as noticable. seems to be most noticable after running vehicle for a while.
i have a full size dodge cargo van that does this also and has been doing so for as long as i can remember..I didn't expect it in the pathfinder..should i ?
Does this usually happen when parked on a hill. That's the only time I've noticed that same symptom on my old jeep. It's just the transmission slipping into gear. Nothing to worry about, unless it happens on a flat surface.

thanks in advance for your replies
I had it a couple of times when I parked on in incline and put the truck in reverse. I got a small "clunk" going into gear.....its noting to worry about.
I also park on an incline. Whenever I put it in reverse I get the little clunk sound and my brakes make a squealing sound when backing up. It's normal.
i understand about a vehicle being parked on an incline will cause this ..but how about on flat ground?..again it is not really that big of a "clunk" but i notice it is very smooth going into drivemaybe i am expecting too much..my wife has a toyota sienna..brand new as well..i drove it last night and you can not feel or hear anything when going from park to reverse or to drive etc..etremely smooth.
im not really knowledgable about cars so forgive me if my question sems..dumb..
when you put your vehicle into drive or reverse or visa versa...do you feel/hear anything at all??
i do ..mostly in reverse..nothing major..but i feel a shift and here a slight "clunk" (?) it stands out to me mainly because my wifes toyota sienna doesnt do anything..you dont even know you have shifted to reverse or drive.
ofcourse its 40k and my path is 28k. am i expecting too much..is this normal?

Are you used to automatic transmissions?
I've had some that are pretty noticeable going from R to D and some that are pretty smooth & quiet.
It's probably not that unusual, but, do you have a tach; what's your idle speed? Is it set too high?
If it's new, it shouldn't have any u-joint problems, but a bad u-joint can cause a "clunk".
Is it 4wd? If so, does it do it in 4wd & 2wd?

thanks for your reply jerry !
its a 4wd and not as noticeable when in 4wd. also it seems really only to happen in reverse..its not a "clunk"..but more of a muffled thump {lol} from park to reverse or from drive to reverse.
idle speed is at about 650

Well, the idle spped is good.
Keep an "ear out" for changes in the sound, but unless other '05 owners chime in and tell you different, I'm with abmobil.
BTW, a bad u-joint can "click", "squeak", and "thump", often when changing directions, but sometimes continuously. Keep an ear out for that kind of sound too.
It's still under warranty, right? You may want to have the dealership check out the u-joints and the transmission mount.
