Question Sensor Light

Hey all, I've got my 86 720 D pickup, and I've had the sensor light on for a while now. And just recently, I've noticed my gas mileage has gone to crap... My first question is, what exactly does the sensor light mean? Is that the O2 sensor? And if that was bad, would it affect my gas mileage? I appreciate any help!

Isn't there a way to check the codes on this model. I think I recall running them on an 84 Sentra?

My truck is the early 86 model, and from what I've heard before on this forum, I can't check the codes. But the light is on, and my temp guage works, so that only leaves the o2 sensor right?
