Manual Hub problem

Hi All,

New guy here. Got a problem with a 97' Nissan 4x4 King Cab XE. The manual hub on the passenger side is pretty difficult to turn in either direction, free or lock. Really difficult actually.

The Nissan dealer said over the phone that this was a several hundred dollar fix, and that the hub needed to be re-built.

I'm no mechanic by any definition, but that sounded fishey.

Can't it be that the hub is somewhat "dry" and needs some lube??

Anyone seen this problem before??

Thanks much,

Carl

I have the same problem with my driver's side '95 Nissan 4x4 King Cab XE hub.

l'm just going to ask my mechanic to look at it when he re-does the brakes in the front in about 6 months.

I suspect you are right though, probably just needs a re-pack with new grease.

I had that done with my '85. One time my 4x4 wouldn;t function over 25 km/hr and all it was was a lose hub.

Anyone else ever run in to the above problem?? I might add that I live in an area that spreads lots of road salt during the winter. Read, corrosion.
Are these hubs sealed units?? Could it be a white metal corrosion problem??

Thanks.

there should be a thin paper gasket between the hub and where it mounts to, I would remove the mounting bolts , pull the hub and see if there is any grease inside, it may not have any or it may be all dried up, the hub itself should come right off, when you remove the 6 ( ?) bolts, I believe if they are allen head bolts that they are metric. the part of the hub that comes off basically only houses the dial and I believe a spring.

You're not going to belive how simply this ended up being solved

Pressure washed the hubs well, let dry, and then sprayed them with WD-40.

Walla!! They turn very easily now. Just like new.
