$900 for replacing clutch pad/rear main seal reasonable?
Can anyone tell me if paying $900-$1000 reasonable for replacing a worn clutch pad and rear main oil seal in an '89 Nissan 2wd reasonable, or rip-off?
I've called all the dealers in the area and they all want about the same price to do this. I know dealers are a general rip-off, but I don't know of any local Trans. shops to trust here in Houston, Tx. My experience with off-the-wall little shops is that they save you a little money not by labor, but by selling you aftermarket sub-quality cheap parts that they put their own nice markup on....Any recommendations?

Well, the factory clutches last longer, but almost a grand sounds a little steep for a 10 yr old pickup! I did my own (the original was abused for 205,000 before I changed it!) and it wasn't too difficult. It cost me under $200 to do it myself and a couple afternoons to finish it ( Frontys are a little complicated-search for my writeup to see why!). I dunno about the seal as I didn't change mine. If it is a 1 piece style, it should be fairly easy. If it's a 2 piece, it's a PITA.

Unfortunately according to the Chilton manual, I don't have the equipment to change out the seal, so I don't think it is something I could even try to do myself. The rear seal seems to be the culprit oozing oil ruining my clutch pad, so it needs to be done....
