Grinding from transfer case after shifting from 4wd to 2wd
1995 D21 V6 5spd 4x4 w/ autohubs
Running in 4wd hi works fine. At a stop, shift into 2wd, drive backwards a couple yards, and 4wd light on dash goes out. Pull forward and I get a grinding/chunking sound from somewhere around the transfer case. If I go back and forth several feet in each direction (with the grinding and chunking in both directions), after half a dozen times or so, everything opens up and 2wd works fine.
My guess is the tranfer case is not completely disengaging when I shift into 2wd. That being said, what recommendations do people have. What specifically should I check (I'll probably open up the transfer case this weekend) ? Any other ideas as to what might cause it?
I'm a vet mechanic, but all with Nissan RWD and Subaru AWD systems.
Thanks...
