4x4 Questions

Hey guys i just got my 98 Four wheel drive Pathfinder SE and noticed that the manual said with my automatic transmission i can shift from 2H to 4H while moving. So does this mean i can be traveling up a road and feel the car slip a little and then just slip the 4WD selector to 4H and be on my way in four wheel drive, and can i go back to 2H while moving or am i just misunderstanding? Also what is the difference between 4H and 4L.

Thanks in advance

4H is four wheel high and 4L is four wheel low. I dont know if it's true or not, but i have slipped at 20 before and put it in four wheel high and it picked up just fine. 4L is only when you're stuck in a pretty bad ditch or if you're wheeling through a trail. dont exceed 30 miles per hour when you're on 4L though.

yeah you can usually shift into 4Hi while going 30 mph or less. Make sure though if your back tires start slipping let off the gas and then move the lever into 4Hi as this will make sure the back wheels are already spinning at the same speed as the fronts and you won't get a big "CLUNK" when you engage the 4x4. 4Lo is for when max torque is needed and you actually have to stop the vehicle, put the car in nuetral and then push down on the transfer case lever and move it into 4Lo. Also, Look in the owners manual and see if the truck has auto locking hubs. if so make sure you follow the procedure to unlock the hubs after using 4x4 and you aren't going to use it again for a while (especially before getting up on the highway) I learned this the hardway when my gas mileage took a nose dive because I was driving around all the time with my front hubs locked!

Later,

a good idea to follow is that if your going into an area where you might need 4 wheel drive ( only if your truck has manual hubs), you should lock the hubs first, you can still drive in 2 wheel drive and than when you need 4 wheel drive you just put it into 4 high. It's better to lock the hubs before hand than having to try to do it when the hubs are under water or mud, etc.
