MIL Check Engine Light Reset

Ok, I've got a 1996 P/U with a Check engine light that just won't go off. I did manage to get a friend to retrieve the codes once and I'm changing the necessary parts (O2 sensor and Evap Canister), but I won't have that option again.

So, how do I reset the light? Unhooking the battery for nearly 24 hours did not work, using the process outlined here: http://www.nissanforums.com/showthre...k+engine+light didn't work. Also, when I called the Nissan dealer they said there was no MANUAL way to check the codes nor reset the light.

Thanks in advance!

You said your friend retrived the codes. Did he use an OBD II scanner to do it? If he did, then he should be able to reset the check engine light. I have an OBD II scan tool and I know it works.

Yes, he did have a OBD II scanner he retrieved the codes and reset them once. Unfortunately, the problem tripped the light again and now he longer has access to the scanner.

So I'm back to square one.

That's telling me that you have yet again another problem with another sensor. If your buddy can't get that scanner back, you might check your local aoto parts stores and see if they do free OBD II scanning. Do they have Auto Zones in NY? They have free checking and tool lending down here in TX

Yes, we've got AutoZones here in NY. That's good info to know, I'll see if they lend/rent the equipment.

BUT, does anyone know how to check/clear these codes manually? Was the dealership right, is there no manual way?

96 Pathfinders had a diagnostic mode selector screw on the ECU that could be used to read/clear the codes, I would think your pickup of the same year would have one too.

Yup, it does. Yesterday, I removed the bench seat so I could get to it. (It's located under the passenger side.) Now, the Hayes manual said it should have two diagnostic lights on it but I couldn't find any. I set the screw to diagnostic mode anyway, turned the truck on. Steady MIL, no diag code flashing. Set it back to normal, no change. MIL stays on.

Next suggestion.

If it works like the 96-2000 Pathfinders, there won't be any lights on the ECU as you've found out. It blinks the MIL light on the dash in long and short blinks. Turn the key until the MIL light is turned on, then you turn the screw all the way clockwise and hold for 3 or more seconds, then turn it all the way back and the MIL light on the dash should start flashing. Repeat to clear the codes and turn the ignition off. Hopefully yours works the same.

I was told by my mechanic that there was a technical bulletin put out about O2 sensor wiring harnesses going bad. This in turn sets off the check engine light and gives a engine code of a faulty O2 sensor. Replacing the harness makes this go away and saves allot of money when it comes to replacing O2 sensors.

That TSB is specific to 96-99 Pathfinders, 99-2000 Frontiers (v6) and 2000 Xterras (v6), not applicable to his 96 P/U.

Now THAT worked!! So far the light has not come back on (knock on wood) so with any luck the new O2 sensor will do the trick.

THANKS!!
