Having Starter problem with a 1984 Nissan/Datsun 720 4x4 Truck
Hello everybody I hope that someone can help me with my problem. I recently bought a 84 Nissan 720 4x4 pickup with a z24 engine and a 5 speed transmission with a mint body. The truck needed a new tranny when I bought it. I was going to rebuild the tranny but when I took out the old one I found that some of the gears had shattered. I then purchased a tranny out of a salvage yard (from a 85 720, 4x4, z24) I put the tranny in the truck and it bolted in great. I then went to start the truck and it started OK, but when the started spun it sounded like there was a flat spot on the fly wheel, then the starter went to heck.
I have now gone through two starters (first one was defected) and now when I try to start the truck it seems to bind up on the fly wheel and it wont turn over at all. The starter also seems to be engaging to far and is causing damage to the fly wheel. Also when it binds up it will act as if the battery is dead and just click, but if I take out the starter and put it back in it will work then bind up again.
I have put in about 22 hours trying to figure out the problem myself and I can't figure it out. Also there was never a problem with the starter and fly wheel until I changed out the tranny. Can somebody please help me get this truck on the road.
I had a kind of the same thing happen to me on my B11, Sentra... long story short.... I forgot to put a spacer (washer) back in when I bolted it up :dumbass: oh well lesson learned
Do what I used to do. Always park on a hill. And find a girlfriend with strong legs (for push starting).
Seriously; Is there allot of metal shavings on the starter?

No, there is a small amount of shavings, but not a lot as I haven't pushed it to much with it binding up. It is doing some damage to the fly wheel though.
If this starter is a recent implant, then it might make sense to bring it back to the store and get a replacement.
If this is possible then it may be worth a try.

I've gotten the starter from a local automotive store. This is the second starter that I have gotten from them and both have worked the same, not satisfactory. I'm going to take the tranny out tomarrow and inspect the flywheel more closely. Any other ideas. Do they make shims for the starters?
