Hi, Just rolled off the lot with a 2005 Pathfinder XE. Very happy even this model because the base just packs so much standard options already. *props to nissan*.
Now, heres the question, on the gas tank door, it says " Recommend Premium Fuel ". However, in the manual, it says to use Regular gas... but further down in the paragraph it says it requires an octane of 91 or above, which is Premium fuel in Canada, and I'm assuming the states as well. Now, which type of fuel IS the minimum for the VQ series engine?. I'm going to be using premium fuel for the break-in period anyways but the difference between premium and regular gas is quite big after a few years. THanks

The recommended fuel is premium, but you can get by on 87. I think (someone correct me if I am wrong) with premium fuel, you'll make the most use of the engine, in regards to performance and gas mileage. I plan on using premium in mine.
I'm curious about this as well. I was under the impression that you could use regular in it, but you would best maximize the performance by using premium. The manual confused me a little bit as well. I've bought 87 octane for my first few fill-ups, just to save a little $. Has anybody else heard that you really are supposed to use premium?
you can use 87 in a pinch... best bet is 91 or 93 for best gas milage performance etc... but don't be scared if you need to put 87 in or accidentally put 87 in.. your car has a knock sensor that can and will retard the engine to run on 87, but you would be better off with 91 at least... i wouldn't consistently run 87 because if your sensor fails you could have problems... the engine was designed with 91 in mind...
if you want, look in the sentra section under the QR2.5 engine heading, there is a write up there somewhere, because this question was raised about spec V's as well...

Never put 87 octane in. Even though they do come with knock sensors, damage can sitll be done. The whole "octane" thing deals with compression ratios. With high compression, the air/fuel mixture is compressed more, thus heating it up more (anything that is compressed heats up), and the higher the octane, the more the fuel can withstand the heat. So if you have high compression pistons (like a pathfinder), and you have 87 octane in, when your pistons compress the air/fuel mixture, the 87 octane can't withstand the heat, and will ignite without the spark from teh spark plug. This can cause many problems. So a common rule is... Pay a little now, or pay a lot later. That, and changing your oil periodically are the easiest things that you can do for your car in order to make it last. Dont go cheap on such a beautiful car.
