Unhappy EVAP Codes

Wondering if anyone could give me some guidance / experience on a few service light codes that I recently pulled off of my 98 Frontier. The codes were 0440 and 1448, both EVAP system related. Not sure if it may be time to replace the EVAP canister and associated valves or might I simply need a new gas cap? Has anyone pulled these codes and what was your course of action to solve the problem?

Re: EVAP codes

I have a 97 Pathfinder and had the same EVAP codes about 18 mos ago. Mine turned out to be a mess. The canister had started to leak charcoal into the EVAP vacuum lines and ruined some sensors. There were some other codes for the sensors as well. I can't remember which ones or too many details, other than it was expensive. There was a lot of labor cost since they have take all the rubber lines and blow them out. I think these were common problems 96-98? Hopefully yours isn't as involved.

Search through the truck/suv forums; there are a lot of better qualified explanantions than I can give. I bought mine with 40k miles, and I can say this is the only problem I have had in the 45k+ miles I've put on it.

I love Nissans - most of the time

Good Luck. Scott

hi- i have a 1998 2.4L frontier too and sometime ago the service engine soon light came on. the dealer said it was either the gas cap or a valve in the emission system that needed replacing($100 plus). so i said forget it, replaced the gas cap. then i disconnected the battery for 10 minutes or so. the light came on on a few occasions after that, but doesn't anymore.
i was told that, if a serious problem develops, the light will flash.

Hi guys,

Although I don't have a Nissan yet. I did have the same problem on my '97 Dodge Ram. I had to repleace the charcoal canister and the purge control solenoid. Basically when you get that kind of code it means the system when working pulls a small vacuum on the fuel tank and there's a leak in that system. The system consists of vacuum source, the electrically operated valve, tubing all the way to the fuel tank. I know that Dodge and Nissan are 2 completely different trucks, but I hoped this info helps.

My 97 had the P0440 and P0446 codes, the P0446 code matches the P1448 code you have for the vent control valve since our 97 pathys don't have the P1448 code. A leaking gas cap would give you the P0440 but would not result in the P1448 code. I replaced both the canister and vent control valve for about $80 a few weeks back to fix the errors.

Thanks for the help guys. I replaced the gas cap and reset the service engine light, but came back on after 200 miles or so. Figured I would try the cheap approach first. Sounds like the problem is with the EVAP canister and control valve, that's next on the list. Can someone tell me if this is a pretty easy job and where's the best place to get the parts?

Easy replacement, look behind your driver's side rear wheel and you'll see the canister. Remove the vacuum lines and remove the three bolts. Make sure to hit them with penetrating oil, mine were pretty rusted. Then just install the new canister and reconnect everything. You might want to try to remove the vent control valve from your current canister, if you can get it off you could just try a new vent control valve. Try everythingnissan.com, cheapest price I could find.
