I have a 1985 nissan 720 4x4 , z24 engine. It started pinging and knocking. Replaced thermostat, plugs intake and exhaust, checked sparkplug wires, replaced cap and rotor button and coils. Checked timing and is ok. idles real rough and pings over 2000 rpm. no power. Over heated 2 weeks ago put coolant in it and ran fine. Replaced thermostat just in case when it started pinging. Put a pressure test on cooling system over night, pressure stayed up no leaks. Does anyone have any ideas? When it starts up cold it cranks like it is out of time.

I did compression check. cyl.#1 165 pps
#2 170 pps
#3 22 pps
#4 22pps
I think that head gasket between cyl's 3 & 4 is blown.

Pulled head off. Intake and exhaust manifolds are a bitch. Head gasket blown between third and fourth cyl.Have to figure out how to torque intake bolts hard to get too.Anybody know how?

I did it replaced head gasket. Engine runs good. If you take on this project I recommend that you take lots of pics. of your vacuum lines they are a real bitch
to figure out.
