I just purchased a 95 4x4 King cab with V6 and auto trans. I got a great deal on the truck but there was a catch...it doesn't go into reverse. When I attempt to put it in reverse its like its in neutral. I bought the truck with the anticipation that I would have to have the transmission rebuilt or replaced. I'm wondering if anyone can give me advice on the best plan of action to get the transmission fixed correctly. Should I speak with local mechanics and ask them their experience with this particular trans? Should ask them exactly what parts they will replace and what kind of parts they will install? A couple mechanics have told me that they replace the converter, which some rebuilders don't do. He also said he uses all APD Parts (??). Should I order a remanufactured trans from nissan, which looks to be a much more expensive option?
The estimates I have gotten to rebuild it range from $950 to $2400 with warraties ranging from 6 mos/6k miles - 12 mos/12k miles.
I have a 90 4x4 hardbody with a manual, which is currently for sale, and have had the trans rebuilt twice and I think its on its way out again - so I'm now very skeptical about who rebuilds it and exactly what parts they are replacing. Any advice on this will be much appreciated.
just for fun I checked my local dealer and they told me $1708.00 for factory re-man trans, with a 12mo/12,000mi warranty, Have you checked your dealer ?
$2135 + $400 core charge. = $3,083.14 installed for a remanufactered unit. I think I'll have to go with the rebuild.
A guy a Cottman told me that this model was notorious for losing reverse because of the design. He told me that when they rebuild them they add lube holes in the reverse drum as well as a higher quality bushing which makes the reverse gear a lot more durable. I'll make sure I request this to be done when I get it rebuilt. Does anyone have any other advice on getting this trans rebuilt?
At least Nissan offers a reman unit for your truck. I have the same "where the heck did reverse go?" problem with my 93 Kingcab 4 cyl 2 wheel drive. They DON'T offer one for it! Of course they DO offer a new one for $3000 uninstalled. I'm gonna go with a local rebuilder for around $1300 for the complete job.
I think some of the dealership folks call them "new" and some call them "reman" transmissions but I believe they are talking about the same thing. -- A remanufactured unit from Nissan
$825 plus $350 core and $85 shipping for a remanned tranny from Phoenix Hard Parts. They sell these trannys all day long on Ebay and I've never heard anything bad about them. They only have 9 negative feedbacks out of 3200 total...
