Need advise!!! quick

OK....i have a friend at work who has a 92 pathfinder he needs to get rid of. the truck does not run but the mechanic said its the timing chain and thats it. Brand new tires too....he said he will get rid of it for like maybe $500....should i do it and fix it myself. how hard is it to replace the timing chain? I have done alot of things on engines but never the timing chain...i dont think it not somehting i couldnt do.
and the tranny is only 3yr old too
Ill provide more info once i get it....from what i have been told, its in very good shape

Timing chain could be big $$$ depending on if the engine is an interference design. I suspect it is. It's also possible that it's something else. In any case, if it's in good condition otherwise - it may be worth doing an engine swap, or you should be able to sell it for parts and get your $500 back. Call a few salvage yards and see what they'd pay for the truck in it's current condition (good transmission, body, seats, etc - but bad engine) - if it covers your $500 investment there's no downside to trying!

Pathfinders didn't get timing chains until 2001 when they started putting the 3.5 engine into them.

From what I've seen, the belt isn't extremely difficult to change, but it takes a while to get everything apart to where you can get at it. If you do change the belt, make sure to do the water pump at the same time so you don't have to tear everything down again right away.
