1990 Pickup: too old for upgrade?

Hi,

So I bought the 1990 pickup with 275,000 kms (170,000 mi)

First Question: Can I "upgrade" the breathing (air intake, maybe exhaust) on this old engine without the extra hp blowing it up?

I'm looking for a few more ponies without compromising my fuel economy, or costing too much.

Don't be silly. Of course it won't "blow up" the engine. You can add a K&N drop-in filter for not too much that would help a little, but you're only starting out with 103 HP to begin with brand new, so don't expect much.

Thanks. I was just concerned about extra loading on old, worn, wrist pins, conn rods, bearings, etc.

But isn't the 1990 135hp? (It's the multi-port injected, 12-valve KA24, not the Z24i)
