Tachometer and valve cover gasket and idle screw

87 Hardbody, z24i 4cyl, manual 187k miles (no air, no tach, no power anything, not even a cig lighter for my cell phone)

The valve cover is leaking. I read that some gaskets need a sealant, and some don't. I read that some sealants give off vapors that create a problem with the O2 sensor. Any tips? Can I expect to break the bolts?

Also, is there anything I should check or replace while I have the cover off?

Is a tach a tach? It has been tough to troubleshoot my idle problem (other post) without a tach. I am happy to go to the boneyard and get a used one or buy something on ebay. Are there compatability issues or can I put anything in my "beater"?

The idle screw on my throttle body used to have some sort of o-ring around it. It disintegrated and now the screw is way too far into the TB. What ever should I do? :-)

when you buy the gasket it should tell you what type to use if you need any.

i reccomend going to the junkyard and getting a guage cluster of a similar year and see if that does anything
