timing issue

I just bought a 1985 nissan 4x4, 720 series 5 speed.
never had one,and the engine is unique to me, with spark plugs for the exhaust.
I put a timing light to it, after unplugging the vacumn at the distributor and plugging the hose, hooked the timing light to #1 intake spark plug wire.
I found the timing at about 20 degrees, attempted to turn the distributor to obtain 5 degrees, turned it to end of adjustment, and got to 12 degrees.
looks like the distributor has been removed and set in the wrong spot?
I know old chevy 283, when you pull the distributor, the slot in the oil pump where the distributor shaft fits into, moves slightly as the oil pump is spring loaded.if you set the distributor right back in the slot and it is in the wrong spot.
anyway, i am looking for some input on the distributor placement, and want to make sure i hook to the # 1 plug when checking the timeing on this engine
z 24, usa, non california model. any input please please?

Remove the valve cover and rotate the engine by hand until you see the exhaust valve close on the #1 cylinder, then rotate it a bit further until the intake valve JUST begins to lift. Then back it off a little until the intake valve is fully seated again. That's TDC for #1.
