Unhappy '92 hardbody fuel pump problem

hi folks!! newbie here who needs some help! i have a '92 hardbody pickup that i think the fuel pump went bad in. i pulled the gas tank and removed the pump. if i hook a battery charger directly to the pump it runs but doesn't pump anything. so at that point i figured i have the problem licked. but then i took a power meter and probed the harness and i find the wire that is supposed to supply power to the pump doesn't have any juice. the power wire for the fuel gauge has juice as does the wire that goes to a sensor on the side of the pump assembly. so here's the question, is there a sensor that cuts power to the pump to prevent it from running dry if the tank is empty which would explain why i have no power with the harness disconnected from the pump. any help is appreciated.

Is your fuel sock plugged? Is the pump getting enough amperage to run from a battery charger? Is the car being cranked over when you are testing for voltage? There are a lot of variables here.

[wire that is supposed to supply power to the pump doesn't have any juice. the power wire for the fuel gauge has juice as does the wire that goes to a sensor on the side of the pump assembly.
I had the same problem on my 95 hardbody.
Probe the wire further up (away from sender)
on mine there was a break in the wire about an inch from the harness. There was no break in the insulation though so you wouldn't be able to tell from looking at it. I spliced the wire (cut out the dead spot) & soldered it back together & have had no problems in the last 42000 kms
Good luck
Alex

hi- you've likely checked this but-just in case- my 1993 wouldn't go the other day and i discovered that the fuse for the fuel pump had blown for some reason. all ok now.
