Yes, that's the oft-cited "Minimopar" study. Probably the oldest and most complete study of dissected oil filters anywhere. There is another one on the site of the North Texas Prelude Owner's Group (NTPOG) which looks at filters which fit most Hondas.
Some people slam such studies as they don't
actually prove which filters
filter the best.
However, I like to look through them and look for signs of quality among the different brands. I figure these to be great
indicators of performance. After all, why go through the bother and hassle of using quality materials in a quality looking design ... only to have it not work well?
Another thing which needs to be said is these studies tend to be car (brand) specific. Among the brands of filters, the best for a Mopar (or Toyota, BMW, Honda, etc ...) is not necessarilly the best for a Nissan. For example, I had settled on Hastings for my Honda Civic ... but the same brand filter fitting my QR25DE was a tad disappointing (small). The Wix/NAPA Gold filter for the Nissan #51356 looks great and is the best filter I've found for this application to date.
Somewhere on BITOG, there's a filter
flow test. This is useful as the last thing you want your oil filter to do is restrict oil flow to the various parts of your engine ... especially at high RPM.
I'll see if I can find a link to it ...
