ok, i just took off the intake for the airfilter today. it gives my truck more power and punch, but is it bad for the engine?
thanks
Hey, If you are talking about the flex tube coming from the air tube (above radiator) then you are totally fine. Mine has been gone since 3 months after buying truck in 95. Little noisier. You may not want to ford streams this way. There is a better chance of water injestion but I have never had a problem with it. If you find a way to pipe in cooler air (ie move radiator overflow) post a pic. Been trying to figure this one out for a while. The stock intake muffler was totally restrictive especially at higher rpms.

Just to clarify, what the author means is that he removed the air intake tube prior to the filter. The KA Hardbodies have an intake muffler mounted behind drivers side headlight. Air then travels through a small tube across the radiator, through flex tubing, and into the filter housing. Removing the flex tubing an easy way to add power as it removes 3 foot of restrictive inlet piping. Especially in a 2wd where taller gearing and less weight make it much more noticeable. The downside is that there is a lot more noise when run this way. There is also a chance of water intrusion though I have never had a problem with it in 9 years. I am surprised that no one has manufactured a kit to move the radiator overflow bottle and pipe cold air into the filter housing from beside the right headlight.
To summarize- THE AIR FILTER IS NOT COMPROMISED IN ANY WAY.
Thanks, I needed to say that....

ok I get what your saying now...sorry
by taking off the "duct" to the air cleaner you are by passing the resonator(black box) which keeps the noise down and slows the air flow. This system pulls air from outside of the engine bay so if you replaced the resonator with some type of tubing you would have a cheap cold air system without the restrictions.

Yeah, you got it... It currently draws from the engine compartment, but I would like to rectify that.
