A rich condition. Most all vehicles typically will exhibit some smell at sometime. Especially when you're cruising along and suddenly hit the throttle. The engine goes from running relatively lean to suddenly rich and the cat will sometimes exhibit an odor. If it just plain stinks all the time, I would check into the fuel system. Most likely culprit would be the oxygen sensor probably.
