Hi guys, a buddy of mine has a '90 pathfinder and we think the fuel pump is bad in it. We took it appart and installed a new one but it does not come on, so looks like we rushed to judgement here - shoulda checked the harness more thoroughly.
Do any of you know what the 5 wires going to the pump are? I need color codes with definitions.
Also, would there be a problem with bypassing the harness, and running our own wiring to the pump? I've done this on my nissan but its older and the pump is outside the tank. Anyone see a problem with hard-wiring the in-tank fuel pump? Of course it will be fused and only come on with the ignition.
Is the relay okay? I cannot remember the colors, but the wires on mine are power and ground for the fuel pump, gauge and it's ground, and likely a low fuel warning light which utilizes one of the other grounds. I would shoot the wire for the pump before replacing it. It could be something as simple as a ground.

So it would be OK to run out own wiring to the pump?
Never done this with an in-tank but in theory it should work the same as an external pump. The relay is ok, we checked that.
If anyone else knows the color codes, please chime in
Why don't you check the fuel pump relay and fuses under the hood first? If the relay took a crap on you, that would cause it to not come on either.
